Ego Death
Visual system design for The Internet's 2015 album "Ego Death". I chose to redesign Ego Death to highlight the band’s authentic and groovy R&B/soul style, and to highlight the band’s lead singer, Syd. Ego Death takes the listener on a journey through the ups and downs of Syd’s relationships with women and her struggles to achieve fame as a queer female artist.
The original cover for Ego Death displays the band members standing in casual clothing in front of an orange background, and the title "Ego Death" is located in the bottom corner in a small, hand-drawn type. With my redesign, I believed that I could better represent what the album embodies: a vibrant journey of navigating life and relationships as a queer person of color supported by psychedelic sounds that resemble a transformative ego-death experience.
Ideation
Mindmapping
I began my process by dissecting each song from the album and writing down keywords and themes that recur throughout the album.
Mood boarding
The album Ego Death is about setting yourself free from the things holding you back in life. It is about self-acceptance and growth. Through my mood board, I wanted to convey an abundance of vibrancy and energy. I wanted to display flowiness and movement, just like little organisms on a forest floor at the beginning of spring. I wanted to covey a connectedness of energy.
Digital Sketches
Early explorations of texture, color, pattern, and line work were made via Procreate.
visual identity
For typography inspiration, I looked at 60's and 70's soul, funk, and jazz album covers. I chose a groovy-looking typeface and then later distorted it so that it would blend into the background pattern.
I created the background patterns in Procreate on an iPad by creating thick, translucent brush strokes and then distorting them with the Liquify tool.
